There's nothing quite like the sound of last summer to bring on the lust for this coming one.
As soon as the familiar vocal strains through the speakers you'll be sprung right back into the mindless throng of the madness they call DC10 or Cocoon terrace, and anywhere else that Chilean ex-God of Min played in 2008. We know this record has been hammered to death last season, but only by the few, and it's only now that it's getting an official release, besides it's so bloody good we really don't care how old it gets.
If a relatively unknown Swiss DJ were to think of a way to break his name and get signed to one of the coolest labels on the planet, 'La Mezcla' is the kind of instantly recognisably track he'd want to make.
Yes, it completely encapsulates the style of Luciano to the point of formulaic, and yes, panpipes playing 'frere jacques' is gimmicky and should be thoroughly annoying after the fiftieth time, but I dare you to defy that Latino songstress and not raise and wave one arm in the air in a Villalobos stylee by the time she dominates the track.
Of course Michel is already on his 2nd release for Cadenza by now, firmly ensconced in the Swiss stable, but this release has been saved, no doubt with Miami/summer '09 in mind, as his first solo excursion; it even comes with a stripped down less flighty 'dub' version, for those frightened off by the vocal or indeed anyone not blessed with the privilege of playing in an open-air nut-house full of Italian rave monkeys.
But come back to the original, as we surely will do, over the coming months, and just enjoy the simple afro-rhythms, mentalist latin vibe and surprisingly restrained pace of one of the best tracks to come out of last summer. It's a safe bet that there'll be plenty more lined up for this one.
